The city I live in had to replace all their older firehydrants as they could no longer get parts for repairing them. Most of these hydrants had been decorated several years prior as part of a contest to beautify the community. The hydrants slated for replacement all had a bright blue spray painted 'X' on them; they were then dug up and hauled away to an industrial site by the railway tracks. While this was going on my husband and I drove around town taking photos of as many of these decorated hydrants as we could find. We also ended up buying one and having it installed in our dog's fenced in run in our backyard!
"Hydrant Graveyard" is a sgraffito - while in Italy and at a workshop, I became captivated by this art form and am exploring this technique with oil pastels.
Oil pastel, 8x10" on acid free paper, matted to fit an 11x14" frame.
Price: $195 matted to 16x20, $225 with mat and frame, plus taxes and shipping.
