"The Messenger" reflects my love of ravens -both this artwork and my accompanying poem (below) were inspired by the ravens of Riding Mountain Park here in Manitoba. Oil pastels layered over watercolor using sgraffito technique. Practiced in Italy since the 1730’s, Sgraffito is an old and beautiful “subtractive” method of creating images by scraping away a surface of medium in patterns and shapes to expose underlying layer(s) of color.
8.5" x 11.25" original artwork on acid free paper paper matted to fit a 16"x20" frame.
Hraefn has perched close by,
silent, still, keenly observing,
on a scouting mission for his gods
listening intently, on the watch
for secretive plots and darker thoughts
the reporting of which
might save his world.
He’ll not uncover a thing of import
from this spot,
and I am watching him
just as closely
observing the tint and flash
of dark feathers
the shape of beak and wing.
As I draw his being I ponder
whether I should call out his name
and ask when all will be put to right?
Just then Hraefn responds
with a gravelly “cras – cras!”
“tomorrow – tomorrow!”
